Chinese festivities are a time of reunions, laden with sumptuous feasts, sweet treats, and festive gaiety. To year, we were engaged by Goodwood Park Hotel for our food photography services, capturing the full spread of their Lunar New Year Offerings and Midautumn Festival mooncakes.
To evoke the jubilant spirit with the coming of spring, we chose a bright colour palette of warm yellow, orange, and red, to represent auspiciousness. We also incorporated green as a secondary colour, representing fortune, and providing contrast that complemented the overall colour scheme. Finally, we used iconic Chinese props, serveware, cloths, and plates, to tie in a sense of tradition, and symbolising Goodwood Park’s heritage.
As for the Midautumn Festival, we were tasked to capture a range of traditional baked and snowskin mooncakes. We used predominantly warm colours for the backdrops, playing with lights and plants to create whimsical shadows. The only photo with a different treatment is the durian snowskin mooncakes. With a green backdrop and darker toners, it stands out as the hotel’s all-time speciality.

Chinese festivals are steeped in history, with heavy significance in every dish. This year, we were engaged by Yan Ting, the signature Chinese restaurant of The St. Regis Singapore, to shoot for the Dragonboat and Midautumn Festival.
The Dragonboat festival is always a drool-worthy affair with its traditional rice dumplings. Crafted by hand with the crème de la crème of ingredients such as truffles, abalone, and golden-dried scallops, we wanted to showcase the opulence of each rice dumpling. To do so, we shot the dumplings on a gold background with a central focal point and minimal styling of related ingredients. We also used digital imaging to enhance the glossy effect of the dumplings, complete with a subtle halo and a muted reflection.
On the other hand, mooncakes take the centre stage every Midatutumn festival. To give a breath of fresh modernity and an air of sophistication, we opted for a simple set design with pastel backgrounds. Gold props created imbued a sense of elegance, while fluted glass created visual texture for a contemporary feel. Using digital imaging, we incorporated dainty blooms to evoke an oriental style

Revelling in moonlit splendour, we partnered with Glenfiddich to develop not one but two exquisite snow skin mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival. Inspired by the brands’ iconic whisky flavours, we worked closely to conceptualise the entire concept–recipe development & product manufacturing, packaging design, illustration, set design and photography.
The Glenfiddich Our Original Twelve Mooncake is an ode to the brand’s symbolic Valley with a Matcha-pistachio snow skin in a forest green hue and aromatic hints of apple, pear and vanilla. With a filling of roasted barley and brown sugar, it mimics the nuttiness of the whisky, offset by a white chocolate pear jam and whisky truffle at its core.
Encapsulating the mysterious allure of the twilight hour, the Glenfiddich Our Solera Fifteen Mooncake is enriched with hints of spicy, honeyed oak. Its skin is infused with dark ganache whisky truffle speckled with peppers and chilli for a light hint of spice. Its purple skin envelopes a filling of honey and orange blossom, which enhances the piquancy of the mooncake.

Neo Garden is an established caterer, known for its wide selection of local and international fare, serving at parties and functions around Singapore for the past 20 years. For the festive season, Neo Garden launched a Christmas feast of traditional yuletide dishes as well as fusion delights. The client wanted to appeal to the younger crowd with bright colours and a modern aesthetic. Hence, we opted for pastel tones as the backgrounds, throwing in coloured powder inspired by the Indian festival of Holi. Geometric wood blocks and props were specially customized and painted to add to the modern Bauhaus effect of the shoot.

A long-term client of ours, we were thrilled when Guinness approached us to shoot their Guinness Mooncake collection. Complementing the obsidian hues of their signature stout brew, the natural decision was to employ dark tones with hints of gold to create an element of mystery for their mooncake collection.
Additionally, we were tasked to style and shoot Guinness’ exclusive collaboration with a Chinese restaurant. A total of 3 dishes and a portrait chef image was shot and styled, featuring delectable recipes which infuse Guinness signature stout.

To usher in the year of the golden pig in true Chun Tsubaki fashion, no effort was spared to spread festive cheer and good tidings to our friends and corporate clients. Truth be told, it was a very rushed job but the team worked efficiently to produce their respective collaterals.
The first aspect of our Lunar New Year gifting involved ‘Red Packets’. Red is the traditional colour of the festive season for it signifies warmth, good fortune and prosperity in the spring festival. However, we wanted to refine and redefine these red packets, to allow our design to stand out among the commonplace red packets while retaining oriental elements. Hence, the decision was made to have it in our corporate Navy. blue, with elements of camellias and cherry blossoms, emblems of spring as well as our branding of ‘Tsubaki’.
The second element of our corporate gifting was our Miso Caramel Tarts with Pork Floss. Cookies and sweets are often given to friends and relatives, to wish them glad tidings and sweet success. Inspired by Pineapple Tarts, we decided to switch things up with a miso caramel filing encased in a buttery melt-in-your-mouth crust, and finally garnished with pork floss for decadence.
Here’s wishing everyone a joyous and prosperous Lunar New Year, with blessings of abundance and success!

One Farrer Hotel is one of the leading luxury hotels in Singapore offering 5-star urban resort accommodation, and one of our regular clients. To welcome Chinese New Year, we were commissioned to shoot their Yu Sheng dish along with some of their side dishes. To create the festive Lunar New Year vibes, we used the auspicious red colour in elements of textured props such as hand-cut paper, angbao, linen, teacups etc.
For the Christmas theme-related project, we went for a casual/lifestyle aesthetic by creating a feasting tabletop setting with hands-in-frame. To create a contemporary feel, a coblat blue board was used as a table surface, giving instant contrast from the warm tones of the dishes.
